GoDaddy email to Google Workspace

GoDaddy sells two very different things that customers describe identically. One is its own hosted mailbox product, where the mail lives on GoDaddy infrastructure and moving it is a straightforward IMAP export into a new Workspace tenant. The other is Google Workspace resold through GoDaddy, where the mailbox is already Google's and what you actually need is administrative and billing control of the tenant.

The second case is not a data migration at all. Nothing moves. The work is a transfer-out request, verification of domain ownership, and re-establishing super admin control. Quoting it as a per-mailbox migration is either a misunderstanding or a markup.

Most delays on these projects are not technical. They are access. The person who registered the domain has often left, the registrar login sits with a former web designer, or the domain is locked for transfer with a sixty-day hold after a recent change. None of that is discovered by looking at the mailboxes.

We confirm registrar access and domain lock status in the first hour of discovery, before agreeing a cutover date, because a cutover date you cannot make the DNS change on is not a date.

For hosted mailboxes, we create the Workspace tenant, verify the domain, publish SPF and enable DKIM while GoDaddy is still authoritative, then run a full IMAP pre-sync of every mailbox. Users keep working in the old mailbox throughout. The MX change happens in an agreed window, followed by a delta pass to pick up anything that arrived late.

For resold tenants, the sequence is a transfer-out request, confirmation of the new billing relationship, restoration of super admin access to a named person inside your organisation, and then a security review, because a tenant administered by someone else for years usually carries stale admin accounts and OAuth grants.

Under twenty-five mailboxes this is typically a one-to-two week engagement with an evening cutover rather than a weekend one. The largest single risk is not data but the number of places the old address is embedded: website contact forms, invoicing software, payment providers and domain registrars all send to addresses nobody has audited in years.

We inventory those sending systems as part of discovery, because an address that still works but no longer reaches anyone is worse than one that bounces.
